Making Fragrant Candles

Scented candles seem to change the mood in a room in addition to the smell. It can bring you the feel of fresh lemons and citrus or the joy and sentiment of Christmas with a subtle aroma of cinnamon and apples. Add to that, the soft glow of light from the candle and you have an elegant and romantic atmosphere that anyone could get lost in.

The great thing about scented candles is that they smell good even when they aren’t lit!   Half the one of hand making candles is receiving them. I love receiving home made projects or candy from people.

How to make scented candles

  • Decide on the type of wax you will use – soy, palm, paraffin, beeswax, gel wax
  • Melt the wax before pouring it into the mold
  • Use a double boiler–place a smaller pot into a larger pot that is filled with water.
  • Use a thermometer and heat the wax to 170-180 degrees.
  • Add the wick
  • Once wax is melted, remove it from the heat source
  • Add fragrance oil — Add one ounce of fragrance oil to one pound of wax for 6% concentration

Make sure you keep an eye on how much fragrance you use. You don’t want to put too much or you’ll end up with pools forming on your candle. It may also affect the burning capabilities of the candle.

Don’t just stick to fragrances though, add decorations! A beautifully decorated candle that smells good will be a hit with anyone you decide to sell or give it to as a present.
