As an experienced sewing machine repairman, I can tell you that a “domestic” or home sewing machine can do leather, but for heavy leather, you’re going to want an industrial sewing machine.
It really depends on what you want to do.
A home machine can do leather and naugahyde provided the leather is thin enough.
Don’t try sewing saddle leather on plastic made in china machine or any plastic geared machine – you’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t sew or you break something.
