Both have advantages and disadvantages. IMO, if you’re staying mostly on the trail and are hiking in good weather (or have a rain cover), external are better for the average user – especially for the money. They’re not directly touching your back so you don’t sweat as much and can ultimately hold more with all the lashing options available. Internal frame packs add more protection (as he said) and added maneuverability, but also hold less, cause you to sweat more, and are more expensive.
